The roles of impulsivity and mood shifts in decision making

Investigator: Dr Haris Tzagarakis, Dept of Psychiatry, Oxford

Impulsivity and its associated motor effects are defining elements in a number of mental health problems, such as Bipolar Affective Disorder. A better understanding of the mechanisms underlying dysfunctional impulsivity  as well as of the effect of mood on motor action will help devise better treatments  for these conditions. Our experimental approach uses the act of making motor decisions in conditions of uncertainty in order to model the neural basis of impulsivity in healthy humans, and explore the effect of mood shifts on motor decisions in Bipolar Affective Disorder (Funded by the MRC).
